The first modern blockbuster, Jaws was one of the most heavily promoted films of its time, with Universal spending $1.8 million in marketing. There was an almost unprecedented number of tie-in merchandise, including t-shirts, plastic tumblers, books, beach towels, blankets, shark costumes, games, and a whole host of posters. Susan Backlinie was unforgettable as ‘Chrissie,’ the nude swimmer in the opening scene of Jaws, was bitten and dragged before holding onto the buoy, numb with shock. This bloodied moment is seen in this bookstore presentation card ad,
“This girl is / the first / victim of / JAWS,” on heavy cardstock, as a tie-in for Pan Books. Ocean City, Maryland was the location for the opening scene, and is reproduced in this companion book tie-in, “OCEAN / CITY / CITY LIMIT,” on thick cardstock.
