This was director David Lean’s second adaptation of a Charles Dickens novel, “Great Expectations” being his first in 1946. John Howard Davies plays the orphaned Oliver who is abducted into the dastardly Fagin’s (Alec Guinness) youthful street gang, headed by a master pickpocket known as The Artful Dodger (Robert Newton).
