The Outlaw (United Artists, 1946). One Sheet Military Style. Re-Release 50’s
The relationship between Billy the Kid (Jack Buetel) and Dock Holliday (Walter Huston) is strained as they vie for the affection of the gorgeous Jane Russell, in her film debut. The Howard Hughes picture, made in 1941, would be the center of much controversy with censors, causing it to be shelved for years. Hughes briefly and independently distributed the film until United Artists picked it up in 1946. Then entered problems again, after being fully distributed in the 50’s.
Howard Hawks began this film as the director, but soon quit the project due to Hughes’ constant interference. Hughes also designed the Cantilever bra for this film to better “show off” Russell’s chest (who wouldn’t wear it!).
