The Seventh Seal (Contemporary Films, 1958).
Peter Strausfeld Artwork.
This meditative and dark fantasy drama was a highly personal work for director Ingmar Bergman, who found telling a story explicitly concerning death helped him confront his own fears of death, and based much of the film’s iconography on murals from a church his father, a clergyman, preached. The Seventh Seal also marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration between Bergman and Max von Sydow, who would appear in ten more of the director’s films and many of his stage productions throughout the following decades. Blue Robin is offering this poster for the first time!
The Seventh Seal by the inimitable Peter Strausfeld for the Academy Cinema in Oxford Street, London. Strausfeld interned during the war along with Academy Cinema director George Hoellering. After the war, Hoellering asked Strausfeld to produce posters for the cinema. With his distinctive illustration style reminiscent of classical woodcuts, many of Strausfeld’s designs are considered to be superior to any of the studio promotional material produced for those films.
