MGM 1927 Exhibitor’s Book (MGM, 1927). Exhibitor Campaign Book (Multiple Pages, 10″ X 12.5″).
The year of 1927 was a magical year for the MGM studio. This impossible to find campaign book is one of the finest ever printed and contains legend after legend of Hollywood lore on every page. With each piece of art more stunning than the one before, the delicate and fun line drawings of John Held, Jr., are side by side with the haunting works by the prolific and versatile, Fred Powis. It’s a delicious mix of two to four-page full color full painted layouts, to 6″ X 7.5″ tipped in Powis portraits, beautifully suiting each of the following stars: Lon Chaney, Marion Davies, Mae Murray, Lillian Gish, Norma Shearer, John Gilbert, and more. There’s even a triple-panel foldout with Powis art for Ben-Hur! It doesn’t get much prettier than Joan Crawford in Paris, or Norma Shearer in The Waning Sex. And it doesn’t get much rarer that full page drop-dead gorgeous/eerie panels on Stroheim’s Greed and The Merry Widow, or Buster Keaton’s The Battling Butler, or any of the four Lillian Gish titles. There are even pages on Felix the Cat, and Lon Chaney’s Road to Mandalay, and The Blackbird. Did we mention Garbo in The Temptress?
